Working as a freelance writer for About.com (or guides as they are known) takes your freelance skills to a whole new level. As a guide, your aim is to build and maintain your own guidesite.

About.com is a one of the leader providers of every topic under the sun. It attracts around 22 million visitors a month and has more than 500 guides running their own websites.  All the more reason to work for this company.

Your guidesite would consist of :

  • original articles, tutorials, reviews and FAQ’s written personally by you. The more content you produce, the more you earn.
  • A directory of your own content or links to other sites.
  • Your own blog, updating the site 1-3 times a week and writing 2 full artilces every 14 days in your chosen topic.
  • Your own discussion forum, where you act as Administrator.

As a new guide, with the first two years can earn around $725 permonth, but there is serious potential to earn a lot more than that.

Training consists of a 17 day course, (otherwise known as an online prep) with a mentor. You will be able to create a plan, learn about navigation, content, and work on suggestions set by the mentor.

The final evaluation involves a review of your guide site, looking at all aspects of setting up a site, including the quality of writing, knowledge of the tipic and the ability to write for a complete beginner.

Working as a Guide offers long term commitments. However this type of job suits people who can commit the time and also people who possess the mental attitude and energy in seeing   projects through from beginning to end.

At the time of writing, there were available topics included chess, casinos, headaches and migraines, New Orleans, sleep disorders, urology  to name but a few.

Although the opportunity to work for About.com is attractive, not right now, but will consider it later.
