Hipmama.com is just that, a really hip site that you , and doesn’t target the usual mainstream moms, but targets single moms, lesbian and bisexual moms, alternative moms, teen moms and so on. This parenting magazine is produced by Ariel Gore and Bee Lavender, and you subscribe to it. (Although I am yet to receive my copy).
Ariel Gore is the author of ‘How To Become a Famous Writer Before you’re Dead, which takes an honest and practical look at how to write, coupled with how to promote and market yourself as a writer. She is publisher for the printed magazine. Bee Lavender is the author of ‘Lessons in Taxidermy’ a story about her childhood struggle with cancer and other disasters that she experienced throughout her life. She is the publisher for the online Hip mama.
It began in the early 90’s. Ariel Gore was a 23 year old single mom. She started Hipmama with her $1000 student loan, to fund her 500 copy publication. She wanted to look at the reality of motherhood; the sleepless nights, trying to survive on food stamps and being a college student mom. She then joined forces with Bee Lavender, writer, activist and mother of two, and who both had similar views.
It has a political edge to it, and Gore makes no excuses for that. I admire her upfront nature. I’m a down-to-earth mom, and accept that all moms are different, but it’s refreshing to hear REAL life experiences from women from all walks of life with no punches held. It’s a very relaxed site, but if you easily cringe at out of place phrases or street talk, then this is not the place for you.
