Setting goals is an entrepreneurs dream. There are so many books on this topic, but the one that always comes on top for me is Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill. This phenomenal and influential book was first written in 1937, and was part of a 20 year project. The techniques are still being applied today by individuals and businesses worldwide. Famous people in the past have included, FW Woolworth, Henry Ford and William Wright.

The book is not just about thinking and growing rich. Simply wishing for riches is not sufficient. That ‘DESIRE’ has to be from within as well as other positive qualities. This book highlights 6 steps that form your desires. Re-train your subconscious mind. Tell yourself that you are already in possession of the material in which you are demanding. If you are someone who lacks self-confidence, you are shown how you can gain this self-confidence in 5 steps.

“All that a man actions is the direct result of his own thoughts.”

There is an interesting chapter on specialized knowledge. I’m sure you’ve heard the expression, ‘knowledge’ is power. Well he cleverly dissects this common phrase by saying ‘knowledge is potential power. It becomes power only when it is organized into definite plans of action and directed to a definite end.” The book takes you through the ‘13 steps of riches according to Napoleon Hill.

The final chapter looks at: “the six ghosts of fear.” When you start worrying about certain aspects of your life, it makes your mind helpless. A helpless mind is not decisive, so if we can alleviate most of our fears, the decision-making process should be much easier to put into practice. After all, what is worry? Simply a state of mind that we can control.

There is a checklist at the end – a self analysis test. The advice given is to go back to it once a week or once every few weeks to see how you have progressed.

I came across this book several years ago when I was in the process of embarking on a new project. I applied the techniques and reached my goal within the time frame I had set for myself. I had vision, I had determination and most of all I had passion. I was consumed with it each and every day. Even now I am applying the techniques to most aspects of my life. After you read this book, your ideas can become heightened and you can set your success wheel in motion. A highly recommended read!

“Opportunity has a sly habit of slipping in by the back door, and often comes disguised in the form of misfortune or temporary defeat. Perhaps this is why so many people fail to recognise opportunity.” Napoleon Hill
